Although people usually fail to recognize this in a public forum, there are also same-sex abusive relationships. This is one of the things that they mean when they say that: domestic abuse takes all forms. Besides the different types of domestic abuse, from the physical to the verbal and emotional, sexual, and even financial abuse, there is also same-sex domestic abuse. Although there is also help out there for women that are in same-sex abusive relationships, there are still obstacles that domestic abuse victims are facing in getting help to get out of their abusive relationships. Many find it just as hard to find the help to get out, as it is making the decision to get out to begin with. However, in the recent years, there have been many initiatives that are taken to protect women that are in same-sex abusive relationships.
1. One of the key issues standing in the way of female domestic abuse victims to get out of their abusive relationships is the fact that they feel that their issue is not understood. They feel that they are not being given the attention and support that they deserve because their domestic abuse is not taken seriously. They feel as though they do not have the strong support options that they need to make it out of the situation. This makes it that much harder for them to get out of their abusive relationships. Female same-sex domestic abuse victims even say that they feel as though their issues are not even taken seriously by professionals when they report instances of domestic abuse. When they acquire medical attention or call law enforcement authorities to tend to matters of their abusive relationships, they feel as though their domestic abuse is not taken seriously.
2. Another obstacle that victims in same-sex abusive relationships say that they face is that many people do not care that they are a victim of a domestic abuse. They feel condemned in their abusive relationships. They feel that people believe that they deserve the domestic abuse because that is what they were getting themselves into by engaging in a same-sex relationship. They feel that these abusive relationships take place with same-sex couples because there is something fundamentally wrong with their relationships. Therefore, many do not care enough to realize that no one deserves to be abused, and to offer them the proper help that they need.
3. Many women that find themselves in same-sex abusive relationships, feel as though they do not have the proper support that they need. They feel that there aren’t many shelters and support groups that they can turn to because they do not completely focus on their issues. There are also many women there, and that may not be helpful to a particular woman’s recovery. They feel as though they are not in the environment that they need to be in in order to heal properly, at the rate that they would like to.
